REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE
Military. Lieutenant and Captain, Augusta Co., Virginia Militia, under COLs Andrew Lewis and Sampson Mathews. Commanded a Company at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, where he was wounded, but he was still in command at Yorktown.

BIOGRAPHY
David Gwin, the son of Robert Gwin and Jean Kincaid, was born in 1742 in Orange County, Wales and died in about 1822 at Clover Creek, Highland Co., Virginia (SAR application says Bath Co., Virginia). He married (1) in 1768 (SAR application reports date as 7 APR 1761) Jane Carlisle, the daughter of James Carlisle, Jr. and Rachel Campbell, born 26 NOV 1746, died 1787 and was buried on Jackson River, Bath Co. (now Highland Co.), Virginia); married (2) 11 NOV 1790, Viola (Violet) Crawford, the daughter of William Carwford and Margaret Henderson, buried at Clover Creek, Highland Co., Virginia.

On his death his will indicated that he left to son David his farm and "my rifle gun, my desk and bookcase, my four tables, all my chairs, my bed and furniture and three chests"; to grandson David Gwin Kincaid lands alloted to him by Adam Lightner; to son Robert lands on Jackson River; to Grandsons David Gwin Kincaid, David Gwin (son of Robert) and David Gwin (son of John) lands in the Big and Little Valleys; to daughter Isabell a slave Agnes; daughter Margaret a slave Betsey; daughter Rachel a slave Jane; daughter Susan a slave Violet; son-in-law Robert Lockridge and Polly, $2; son James Gwin, one hundred pounds money; daughter Rachel "one feather bed and furniture", sixty pounds money; daughter Susan "one feather bed and furniture", sixty pounds money; remainder of estate to be valued and divided in seven equal parts, to be given to daughters Isabella, Margaret, Susan, children of daughter Elizabeth Givens, children of daughter Jane Cleek, children of daughter Nancy Wiley [there seems to be a seventh unaccounted for]; executors son-in-law William Hogshead; son James Gwin; friend, Otho Wade.

David and Jane had the following children:

i. John, born 1769, died young
ii. James, born 1771, married Rachel Stephenson
iii. Robert, born 1782, married Mary Stephenson
iv. John, born 1787, married (1) Margaret Bradshaw and (2) Lydia Gum
v. Elizabeth, born 1778, married Samuel Given
vi. Jane, born 1780, married John Cleek
vii. Nancy, born 1770, married (1) Hugh McGlaughlin and (2) James Wiley
viii. Mary, born 1776, married Robert Lockridge
ix. Sarah (Sally), born 1782, married Thomas Kincaid

David and Viola had the following children:

x. Isabella, born 1793, married CAPT William Hogshead
xi. Margaret, born 1800, married Robert Coyner
xii. Rachel Viola, born 21 DEC 1802, married William McClung
xiii. Susan, born 23 FEB 1806, married CAPT Silas Hinton
xiv. David S., born 1809, married Frances Beckham
