Military. Private, Capt. Colmery's Co., York Co., Pennsylvania, 1777-1783.
BIOGRAPHY
William Griffith, the son of Thomas Griffith and Eve [--?--], was born on
13 Oct 1742 in Sadsbury, Chester Co., Pennsylvania and died 7 MAY 1832 in
Jenner Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. On 19 OCT 1763 he married Sarah Hammond, the daughter of John Hammond and Deborah Dix, in Menallen Meeting,
Menallen Township, York Co., Pennsylvania. Sarah was born 16 DEC 1743 in York
Co., Pennsylvania, died 18 JAN 1821 in Jenner Township, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania
and was buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery near Boswell, Somerset Co.,
Pennsylvania. Hew moved from Chester Co., to York Co., Pennsylvania about 1758. On 2 JUL 1770 Spring Grove was surveyed for him; he was assessed on 245 acres and sold his lands "on the upper fork of the Connewingo" on 25 MAY 1784. Between 1784 and 1791 he moved to Bedford Co., Pennsylvania. In Spring 1809 he moved to Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.
From 1777 to 1780 he served 4th Batallion, Pennyvlania (Hans Morrison, sub-lieutenant) and was paid £40. From 1780 to 1783 he is listed as being in Capt. Colmery's Company, 4th Batallion, York County Militia and paid £375 17s 6d. On 18 APR 1791 he was granted a bounty land warrant (#9427) of 100 acres.
