REVOLUTIONARY WAR SERVICE
Military. Private, then Corporal, 11th Pennsylvania Regiment

BIOGRAPHY
Christian Shockey, the son of Johann Christoffel Schacke, was born in 1756. He died on 18 APR 1829 in Salisbury, Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He married Mary Welch in Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland in SEP 1784. She was born 19 Aug 1757 and died 2 Jan 1844.

He joined the army in 1777. He deserted in spring of the same year, but immediately joined another regiment. He was brought back to camp and pardoned, but that sumer deserted again, this time with his brother, and the two taking off with two horses. He was court martialed, found guilty and sentanced to death. At the same time another prisoner was given the same sentance but was pardoned. The matter to went to General Washington, who decided to pardon Shockey as well, indicating that while he justly deserved it from the evidence, the other pardoned prisoner deserved execution even more, and therefore decided to pardon Shockey as well. At the Battle of Cowpens, he was wounded in the arm by a British sword thrust; Shockey bayonneted his attackery same time, which probably minimized the lethality of Shockey's wound.

He settled in Somerset Co., Pennsylvania, where he taught shool for many years. He also ran for Sheriff in 1822, but lost.

They had the following children:
